Truth be Told

Credits: Matthew West

“Are we all truthful to ourselves and each other?” This is a question that I hear all the time. I wonder as often as I hear it, too.

What is Truth?

Truth is the opposite of falsehood; it is reality and being in accord. Its concept can be contextually debated in ethics/morals, science, theology, and various spheres of life.

But when talking about Truth, whose Truth is it anyways? Yours, mine, or the absolute Truth? Even the Absolute Truth is often subjectively interpreted. Any wonder why there’s chaos and disagreements everywhere; in our minds and with one another. If only we could all agree to one truth, my truth will have no place or rather its place. Some day your truth will agree with My truth.

Happy hump day as you enjoy Matthew West’s Truth be told. Lyrics below.

Lyrics

Lie number one, “You’re supposed to have it all together”
And when they ask how you’re doing
Just smile and tell them, “Never better”
Lie number two, “Everybody’s life is perfect except yours”
So keep your messes and your wounds
And your secrets safe with you behind closed doors
Truth be told
The truth is rarely told, no
I say, “I’m fine, yeah, I’m fine, oh, I’m fine, hey, I’m fine”
But I’m not, I’m broken
And when it’s out of control I say it’s under control
But it’s not and You know it
I don’t know why it’s so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There’s no failure, no fall
There’s no sin You don’t already know
So let the truth be told
There’s a sign on the door
Says, “Come as you are” but I doubt it
‘Cause if we lived like that was true
Every Sunday mornin’ pew would be crowded
But didn’t you say church should look more like a hospital?
A safe place for the sick
The sinner and the scarred and the prodigals, like me
Well, truth be told
The truth is rarely told
Oh, am I the only one who says
“I’m fine, yeah, I’m fine, oh, I’m fine, hey, I’m fine”
But I’m not, I’m broken
And when it’s out of control I say it’s under control
But it’s not and You know it
I don’t know why it’s so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There’s no failure, no fall
There’s no sin You don’t already know
So let the truth be told
Can I really stand here unashamed
Knowing that Your love for me won’t change?
Oh God, if that’s really true
Then let the truth be told
I say, “I’m fine, yeah, I’m fine, oh, I’m fine, hey, I’m fine”
But I’m not, I’m broken (I’m broken)
And when it’s out of control I say it’s under control
But it’s not and You know it (You know it)
I don’t know why it’s so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There’s no failure, no fall
There’s no sin You don’t already know
Yeah, I know (I know)
There’s no failure, no fall
There’s no sin You don’t already know
So let the truth be told

One thought on “Truth be Told

  1. When I first heard the expression “her truth” I began to lose faith in justice. I like to think of truth as something that is seen, and possibly also heard or otherwise verified as being unchangeable. (The sun may change but the fact of it being there is unchangeable). But when I hear, “She spoke her truth,” that sounds to me as if “she” is going to put a twist on the story that will render it not 100% true anymore. We are getting way too many variations of the truth. The end result is that it seems okay to tell a lie and call it truth.
